Next, I will describe to you both the weaknesses and strengths of the Jones Model which I intend to use in the 3rd. grade classroom.
Strengths:
One of the most prominent strength in this model is that all its constituents work together to create a holistic approach to create a great discipline classroom management. Many classroom management strategies only focuses on limit setting and confronting to solve disciplinary problems but Jones model goes beyond that including responses such as back-up responses, management, incentive, responsibility, etc.
Another strength attributed to this model is the concepts of proximity and helping the teacher stay calmed and maintain self-control when dealing with misbehaving students to avoid fight-to-flight responses. (relaxing breaths) This includes strategies for the teacher to have more self-control once confronting situations are presented in the classroom and to better manage them. The introduction of new strategies such as proximity, or the closing space between the teacher and the off-task student, is new and another attribution to this model. Many teachers tend to react with " flight or fight" responses forgetting to have self-control and remain calm to avoid explosive tempers that in the end are as ineffective as expulsion disciplinary strategies.
Weaknesses:
There is criticism among this model stating that there is no training actions for the teachers to look up at in this model. Alfie Kohn also criticized this model saying that this strategies used to describe this model fails to a "teacher-proof" curriculum. Kohn (1996) also states that this approaches are only short-term approaches and won't be effective in the long run because it is only intended to stop bad behavior.
I do not agree with Kohn's statements because this model goes beyond teaching children how to appropriately behave in the classroom and also helps them be active and learn to work collaboratively to have effective learning.
